Posting Your Surname Interests

Surnames and query requests submitted to the NHSOG web site are sent to the webmaster. He formats the data and places it online. Occasionally, he'll fix spelling and punctuation. Your information will be added to the next site with the next update, which generally occurs on a monthly basis.

Here a few suggestions for making your query more effective.
  1. One Surname (and variants) per query. Other surnames can be in the body of the query, but the query will be listed under one name.
  2. Only use common abbreviations such as b. (born), bp. (baptised), m. (married), and d. (died). When it doubt, spell the word out.
  3. Be specific: Names, dates, places - "Looking for Smiths in NH" is not going be helpful! Maiden names, children's marriages, etc in the body of the query will help other researchers - the search engine pulls up names where ever they are located.
  4. Capitalization and punctuation help the query make sense and easier to read.
  5. Multiple generations in a query will make it easier for other researchers. A researcher will be able to see all your names, instead of multiple search results.
